100 active English learning games — zero reading, zero writing, pure physical fun!

100 Games Ages 3–6 No Reading Required Physical & Active
1
Hoop Jump Circle 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children stand in a circle with a hula hoop flat on the floor in the centre. Teacher calls a child name: "Sara, please jump in!" Sara hops into the hoop. Teacher holds up a flashcard: "What is this?" Sara looks and says the word: "Apple!" Teacher cheers: "Wonderful!" Sara hops back out and the next child waits eagerly for their turn.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: For quieter children, allow them to point and mouth the word before saying it aloud. All children benefit from hearing each other name words.
2
Hoop Pass and Name 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children sit in a circle on the floor. One hula hoop sits in the middle. Children pass the hoop around by sliding it along the floor. Teacher says: "Here it comes — when you touch the hoop, say the word!" A child reaches out, touches the hoop, and names the flashcard: "Banana!" Everyone claps. The hoop keeps travelling until it returns to the start.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If the hoop moves too fast, use a softer surface like a towel under the hoop to slow it down for beginners.
3
Team Hoop Nest 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Children divide into teams of three and stand together inside one large hula hoop — all three squeezed in close! Teacher shows a flashcard: "Cat!" All three children say the word together at the same volume, laughing as they jostle inside the hoop. Teacher nods: "Together, now — CAT!" The three chant in unison. Teams keep going until every child has had several turns.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Mix stronger speakers with quieter children inside the hoop so everyone gets support saying words together.
4
Flashcard Hoop Station 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Five hula hoops are placed on the floor around the room, each with a flashcard picture inside. Children scatter around the room standing near the walls. Teacher calls out loudly: "Number three!" Children race to hoop number three and jump in with both feet. Teacher shows the flashcard: "Dog!" The child inside names it. Teacher claps: "Yes, dog!" Children scatter again for the next round.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use numbered cones near each hoop as an alternative to calling numbers aloud — helps children still learning number words.
5
Hoop Crawl Through 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Two children crouch down and hold a hula hoop upright on the floor between them, keeping it steady. A third child crawls through the opening. As the crawler passes through the centre, Teacher holds up a flashcard: "Elephant!" The crawler pokes their head out and says "Elephant!" The holding children cheer: "Good listening!" The crawler trades places with one of the holders and the next child prepares to crawl.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: The crawler can also skip or hop through instead of crawling, depending on ability level.
6
Musical Hoop Jump 🏵️
Ages 3-5Whole Class10 min
How to Play
1Hula hoops are placed on the floor around the room — one hoop per child. Music plays and children skip, jog, or dance between the hoops. Teacher calls: "Freeze!" Music stops. Every child quickly jumps into the nearest hoop with both feet. Teacher shows a flashcard and the child inside each hoop looks and names the word. Children giggle with relief when they make it in time.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start with two children per hoop if space is tight, then expand to one per hoop as children get better at the game.
7
Hoop Roll and Name 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Children line up behind a starting line. The first child rolls a hula hoop along the floor like a wheel. The hoop rolls and wobbles, then falls over. Teacher quickly shows a flashcard: "Fish!" Before the child picks up the hoop, they must name the word. Child blurts out "Fish!" and retrieves the hoop, passing it to the next child in line.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use a large hoop so it rolls more slowly, giving children more time to name the word before retrieving it.
8
Inside or Outside Hoop 🏵️
Ages 3-5Whole Class10 min
How to Play
1One large hula hoop lies flat on the floor. Children stand around it. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Giraffe!" Teacher calls out: "Inside or outside?" Children think and jump to their answer. Some leap inside the hoop, others step outside. Teacher reveals the answer and all children look at the flashcard together. Those who chose correctly cheer.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Demonstrate the inside and outside positions yourself first so children understand where to go.
9
Partner Hoop Balance 🏵️
Ages 3-5Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners face each other and each hold opposite sides of one hula hoop, keeping it stretched wide between them. Teacher says: "Walk forward together!" Partners shuffle forward in step, cooperating to keep the hoop level. Teacher holds up a flashcard: "House!" Both partners look at the picture and say the word in unison: "House!" Teacher encourages: "Lovely teamwork!"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start with just walking before adding the flashcard challenge — let partners get comfortable balancing together first.
10
Hoop Stack Count 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Teams sit around a pile of hula hoops. Teacher says: "Stack them into a tower!" Children work together, placing one hoop on top of another. Every time a hoop is added to the tower, one child in the team names a vocabulary word: "Jump!" "Happy!" "Red!" The tower grows and children celebrate each new word, laughing if it wobbles.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use large soft hoops that are easy to stack — smaller rigid hoops can topple easily and frustrate children.
11
Hoop Spider Web 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Hula hoops are spread across the floor in an irregular web pattern, hoops touching at different points. Teacher says: "Walk only on the hoops, never the floor!" Children carefully step from hoop to hoop, arms out for balance. Teacher calls out a word: "Kite!" Children find the nearest hoop, stop, and say "Kite!" Class choruses the word back.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Beginners can walk two feet in each hoop instead of the more challenging one-foot balance.
12
Hoop and Beanbag Toss 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Several hula hoops are placed on the floor as targets at different distances from a throwing line. Children take turns tossing a beanbag. Before throwing, the child must look at a flashcard: "Lamp!" They name it, then throw the beanbag at the hoop target. Teacher cheers every attempt: "Almost! Try again!" — or "Perfect!" Children try to hit the nearest hoop, then name the next word.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Place the hoop closest to the throwing line first so all children experience success before aiming for harder distances.
13
Team Hoop Hand Pass 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Teams stand in lines. The first child holds a hula hoop with both hands. On the teacher signal, the child passes the hoop over their head and down to their waist — stepping out of it — then passes it back over their body to the next child. Teacher shows flashcards: children name words as each pass is completed. The team claps each time a pass succeeds.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: The passing action is easier with hoops held horizontally — practise the pass motion before adding flashcards.
14
Hoop Step Naming 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop lies flat on the floor in the centre of a circle of children. Teacher holds up a flashcard: "Moon!" Teacher asks: "Who is nearest the hoop?" One child is closest, so they step inside the circle and name the word: "Moon!" Teacher says "Swap!" and the children rotate positions, so a different child becomes nearest to the hoop for the next flashcard.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: The child who steps in can also say the word before stepping back out, letting the next child rotate in smoothly.
15
Hop Scotch Hoop Edition 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Hula hoops are placed in a line on the floor, spaced like hopscotch squares. Children take turns hopping from hoop to hoop on one foot. Teacher places a flashcard beside each hoop. As the child reaches each hoop, they name the card: "Nest!" "Orange!" "Pig!" After the last hoop, the child turns around and hops back, naming the cards in reverse order.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: For very young children, allow two feet in each hoop instead of hopping on one foot.
16
Hoop Rotation Game 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Three hula hoops are placed in the centre of a circle of children. Music plays and everyone marches around the hoops. Music stops suddenly. Children quickly dive into the nearest hoop — tumbling, laughing, squeezing in. Teacher shows a flashcard and all children inside the hoop say the word together. Teacher claps: "Great group!"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If space is limited, use just one hoop and have three children dive in together.
17
Hoop Obstacle Course 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1An obstacle course is set up using hula hoops: jump over hoops on the floor, step inside hoops, and spin around a hoop held between two children. One child navigates the course one station at a time. At each station, Teacher holds up a flashcard. The child names the word before moving on: "Queen!" then crawls or jumps to the next station.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start with just two stations and add more as children learn the routine.
18
Hoop Shadow Play 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop is placed on the floor near a window where sunlight casts a clear shadow. One child at a time stands inside the hoop — their shadow appears on the wall or floor. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Rabbit!" Teacher says: "Show us a rabbit!" The child inside the hoop hops with one arm up like ears. Class calls out guesses: "Rabbit!" Teacher confirms: "Yes, rabbit!" The shadow makes it magical.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use a bright lamp or sunlight from a window — the stronger the light source, the clearer and more exciting the shadow.
19
Beanbag Hoop Drop 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Three hula hoops are placed on the floor as targets at different distances. Children stand behind a throwing line. Before tossing a beanbag, a child looks at a flashcard: "Sun!" They name it, then throw the beanbag at the hoops. Teacher asks: "Which hoop did it land in?" Child points. Children count how many successful throws the group makes together, celebrating each one.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Focus on counting the successful throws as a group rather than tracking individual scores.
20
Hoop Partner Stretch 🏵️
Ages 3-5Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners each hold opposite sides of a hula hoop, stretching it wide between them. Teacher calls out body parts: "Heads!" Partners lift the hoop above their heads. "Feet!" They lower it to their feet. "Tummies!" They hold it at waist level, laughing. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Tree!" Both partners look and say "Tree!" together. Teacher praises: "Perfect pair!"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If partners struggle to stretch together, have them practise just holding the hoop still at chest height first.
21
Hoop Jump Relay 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Children divide into two teams and line up. The first child runs forward, leaps into a hula hoop on the floor, and names a flashcard shown by Teacher. Teacher asks: "Umbrella!" The child inside the hoop shouts "Umbrella!" Then they run back and high-five the next teammate. Teacher counts each successful turn aloud, encouraging both teams equally.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Count each successful turn aloud so children can track progress without needing individual scores.
22
Hoop Balance Beam Walk 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop lies flat on the floor. Children walk along its edge — one foot on the inside of the circle, one foot on the outside — like a balance beam. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Violin!" As the child balances along the hoop edge, they name the word: "Violin!" Teacher cheers: "Steady! Well done!" The child steps off and the next child steps on.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If balancing is difficult, have children walk along the inside edge of the hoop first before attempting the beam walk.
23
Hoop Colour Sort 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Red, blue, green, and yellow hula hoops are placed in four corners of the room. Teacher holds up a red flashcard: "Watermelon!" Children look at the red colour and run to the red hoop. Everyone who reached the red hoop says the word together: "Watermelon!" Teacher celebrates: "All in red — beautiful!" Children jog to an open space and wait for the next colour.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start with just two colours to avoid overwhelming children, then add more colours as they learn.
24
Pass the Hoop Around 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children stand in a tight circle holding hands. One hula hoop is threaded over one child arm and around their body. Teacher says: "Pass the hoop without letting go of hands!" Children shuffle and turn, feeding the hoop around the circle over their heads and down through their arms. Every time the hoop passes a child, that child names a vocabulary word. The hoop travels all the way around.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If the hoop gets stuck, let children briefly let go of hands to fix it — then hold hands again and continue.
25
Hoop Number Count 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop lies flat on the floor and children gather around it. Teacher places number tokens inside the hoop — three stars. Children count together: "One, two, three!" Teacher holds up a flashcard: "Xylophone!" Children say the word and jump inside the hoop that many times: "One, two, three jumps!" Children leap in and out, giggling.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Counting tokens one by one inside the hoop is a good beginner step before jumping the number.
26
Team Hoop Carry 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Teams of four each hold one large hula hoop — one child at each side. They carry the hoop together, lifting it off the ground, and walk to a marker and back. Teacher shows flashcards along the path. All four children stop, look at the flashcard, and say the word in unison: "Yellow!" Teacher encourages: "Lovely listening, team!" Children trade holding positions midway.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Children can switch grip positions midway to make carrying more comfortable.
27
Hoop Clap Count 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1One child stands in the centre of the circle holding a hula hoop around their waist. Centre child spins the hoop around their waist — it wobbles and rotates. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Zebra!" Centre child names the word while spinning. If the hoop falls, Teacher catches it and says: "Let us try again!" Centre child picks it up and continues.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If the hoop falls often, use a larger diameter hoop which spins more steadily around the waist.
28
Hoop Sound Hunt 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Hula hoops are scattered around the room. Children walk from hoop to hoop — stepping in, stepping out — while Teacher plays quiet music. Teacher makes an animal sound: "Moo!" Children listen and jump into the nearest hoop. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Cow!" Children inside the hoop say "Cow!" together. Teacher makes the next sound and children move to a new hoop.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Vary the sounds to include animal noises, vehicle sounds, and everyday sounds so children listen carefully.
29
Hoop Partner Mirror 🏵️
Ages 3-5Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners face each other. One partner holds a hula hoop between them at chest height, gripping its edge. The other partner makes slow, exaggerated movements — raising arms, turning, stepping sideways — while their partner mirrors every move through the hoop opening. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Duck!" Both partners look at the picture and say "Duck!" together while continuing to mirror.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start with big, slow movements before speeding up — partners need time to watch and copy.
30
Hoop Number Jump 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop lies flat on the floor. Teacher shows a number card: "Four!" Children jump into the hoop four times: "One, two, three, four!" Then Teacher shows a flashcard: "Egg!" The child names the word. Teacher asks: "Everyone jump four times!" All children jump four times together around the hoop, counting aloud.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use a hoop that is wide enough for both feet to fit comfortably inside when jumping.
31
Hoop Partner Sit 🏵️
Ages 3-5Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners sit on the floor back to back, leaning against each other to form a V shape. A hula hoop rests around their joined backs. Partners lean back and stretch the hoop outward with their arms — the hoop lifts off their backs and is held open by their body tension. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Flower!" Both partners look and say "Flower!" together. Teacher cheers: "Strong team!"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Partners can hold the hoop themselves if the stretch is too challenging with body tension alone.
32
Hoop ABC Walk 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Hula hoops are placed in a line on the floor — one hoop per child. Children walk from hoop to hoop, naming a flashcard at each one. Teacher speeds up: "Walk faster, please!" Children try to name words quickly before Teacher calls "Swap!" and they move to the next hoop. Teacher varies the pace to keep everyone alert and laughing.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: When speeding up the pace, use a drumbeat or clap to signal the rhythm change.
33
Hoop Tunnel Train 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Children kneel in pairs facing each other, each pair holding a hula hoop upright between them — creating a low tunnel. The whole class lines up behind the tunnel. The first child crawls through the hoop tunnel, ducking their head. As they pass through, Teacher shows a flashcard: "Glass!" The crawler says "Glass!" before emerging. Teacher calls: "Next!" and the next child crawls through.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If a tunnel is too low, children can crouch-walk through instead of fully crawling.
34
Hoop Animal Walk 🏵️
Ages 3-5Whole Class10 min
How to Play
1Hula hoops are placed around the room as animal dens. Children pretend to be animals — hopping like bunnies, waddling like ducks, stomping like elephants — moving from hoop to hoop. Teacher calls out an animal: "Bunny!" Children hop like bunnies to a hoop. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Grape!" The child nearest the hoop says "Grape!" Teacher celebrates: "Bunny hopping — brilliant!"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Allow children to choose their own animal movement between teacher calls for more creative play.
35
Hoop Freeze Tag 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1One child is IT and holds a hula hoop open in front of them. Other children run around the open space. IT chases and tags another child by placing the hoop around them — the tagged child must freeze inside the hoop. Frozen children are freed when a passing classmate names a flashcard shown by Teacher: "Hat!" Classmate says "Hat!" and the frozen child jumps out laughing.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Tagged children enjoy being freed — use this as motivation and let different children take turns being IT.
36
Hoop Partner Roll 🏵️
Ages 3-5Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners lie on the floor head to head, feet pointed outward like an open book. A hula hoop is placed between their feet. Together they roll the hoop toward their heads, naming a word as it passes. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Ice cream!" Both partners say "Ice cream!" as the hoop reaches their head end. Partners roll it back toward their feet, naming another word on the return.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Both partners should name words so neither feels left out — alternate who rolls the hoop.
37
Hoop Spelling Clap 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop stands in the centre of a circle of children. One child steps into the hoop. Teacher holds up a flashcard: "Jelly!" The child inside claps the number of letters — "Five!" — and then says the full word: "Jelly!" Everyone claps. The child steps out and the hoop is passed to the next child who steps in.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Children can say the number of letters out loud as they clap, reinforcing both counting and vocabulary.
38
Hoop Counting Stones 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop lies flat on the floor. Teacher places counting stones inside the hoop — six stones. Children count together: "One, two, three, four, five, six!" Teacher shows a flashcard: "Kite!" Children say "Kite!" and all jump inside the hoop that many times, counting each jump. Teacher cheers after each group completes their jumps.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use smooth stones or beanbags as counting objects — they are quiet and easy to handle.
39
Hoop Simon Says 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children stand in a circle. One child is Simon and holds a hula hoop. Simon says: "Jump in your hoop!" — children jump into the nearest hoop. Simon says: "Step out!" — children step out. Simon says nothing and children must wait. If a child moves without being told, Teacher says: "Freeze — you can try again next round!" Simon continues giving commands and children follow carefully.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start with only two commands — jump in and step out — before adding more complex instructions.
40
Hoop Group Photo 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Children divide into teams and each team stands together inside one large hula hoop — everyone squished in close, shoulders touching. The hoop is the team boundary. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Lemon!" All team members look at the picture and say the word together: "Lemon!" Teacher celebrates: "What a great team sound!" Children jostle and giggle inside the hoop.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Each team can make up a team name while inside the hoop, practising group identity vocabulary.
41

Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop sits in the centre of a circle of sitting children. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Monkey!" Children count the letters by clapping — M-O-N-K-E-Y — six claps. The child in the centre uses their hand to tap the hoop the same number of times: tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap! Then all children name the word together: "Monkey!" Teacher cheers: "Wonderful counting!"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Children can count the claps out loud together before tapping the hoop — it reinforces the rhythm.
42
Hoop Toss Name 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children stand in a circle. One child holds a hula hoop and tosses it across the circle to a classmate. The catcher names the flashcard Teacher shows: "Nest!" Catcher tosses to the next child, who names a new flashcard. If a child drops the hoop, Teacher says: "Do a fun action — spin twice!" The child spins around and play continues.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If tossing is too hard, children can roll the hoop underhand to a neighbour instead.
43
Partner Hoop Stretch 🏵️
Ages 3-5Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners each hold opposite sides of a hula hoop. Teacher says: "Stretch up high!" Partners lift the hoop above their heads. "Down low!" They lower it to their knees. "Left!" and "Right!" Partners stretch the hoop sideways. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Orange!" Both partners look and say "Orange!" together. Teacher praises: "Great stretching team!"

44
Hoop Foot Path 🏵️
Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Hula hoops are placed in a winding snake-like path on the floor. Children walk the path one foot in each hoop, stepping carefully along. At each hoop station Teacher shows a flashcard. The child names the word: "Parrot!" and steps to the next hoop. Teacher asks: "What comes next?" Children look ahead and continue naming words at each station.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Make the path wider with hoops placed further apart for younger children still developing coordination.
45
Hoop Team Circle 🏵️
Ages 3-5Teams10 min
How to Play
1Teams form circles, each team holding one hula hoop. Children hold hands tightly and pass the hoop around the circle without breaking their chain — threading it over their heads and down through their arms. Every time the hoop passes a child, that child names a vocabulary word: "Queen!" The hoop keeps moving until it returns to the starting person.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: If the hoop snags, pause briefly, free it, and continue — practise patience as well as vocabulary.
46
Hoop Jump Count 🏵️
Ages 4-6Circle10 min
How to Play
1A large hula hoop lies flat on the floor. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Rainbow!" Children jump into the hoop that many times — one big jump for each letter, or as Teacher directs. Child jumps, names the word, then everyone jumps together: "Rainbow!" The children leap in and out laughing, keeping count.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: All children can jump together for each word — Teacher shows the flashcard and everyone jumps in unison.
47
Hoop Sound Station 🏵️
Ages 4-6Teams10 min
How to Play
1Four hula hoops are placed in the four corners of the room — one for each corner. Teacher makes four different sounds — a bell, a drum, a whistle, a clap — and children walk to the matching hoop. Once inside, Teacher shows a flashcard: "Sun!" Children in that hoop say "Sun!" together. Teacher makes the next sound and children move again.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use everyday sounds like a door knock, whistle, clap, and bell so children connect sounds to real life.
48

Ages 4-6Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners face each other holding a hula hoop between them at chest height. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Tiger!" Both partners clap together — clap clap clap clap clap — one clap for each letter. Then both say the full word together: "Tiger!" Partners spin the hoop between them and get ready for the next flashcard.

49
Hoop Colour Jump 🏵️
Ages 4-6Teams10 min
How to Play
1Red, blue, yellow, and green hula hoops are placed on the floor in a row. Teacher calls out a colour: "Blue!" Children race to the blue hoop and jump on it with both feet. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Umbrella!" The child who arrived first says "Umbrella!" Teacher encourages everyone: "Try again — listen carefully!" Children run back to the starting line for the next round.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start with just two colours and add more as children become confident — avoid too many choices at once.
50
Hoop Back Walk 🏵️
Ages 4-6Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children form a circle. One child walks backwards in the centre while the others guide them with words: "Left, left — stop!" The centre walker stops at the hoop. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Violin!" 51
Hoop Team Tunnel 🏵️
Ages 4-6Teams10 min
How to Play
1Children form two parallel lines facing each other — six children per team. Each pair across the lines holds a hula hoop upright between them, creating a tunnel. One child at a time crawls through the hoop tunnel from start to finish. As the child crawls past each hoop, Teacher shows a flashcard: "Window!" Crawler says "Window!" before moving to the next hoop.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Have children in the tunnel name the word and do a small action — a wave or a salute — as they emerge.
52
Hoop Star Jump 🏵️
Ages 4-6Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop lies flat in the centre of a circle of children. One child at a time jumps into the hoop and spreads their arms and legs wide — making a star shape. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Xylophone!" Child in the star pose says "Xylophone!" Teacher claps: "What a beautiful star!" Child jumps out and the next child jumps in.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Children love holding their star pose for three seconds — it builds body awareness and core strength.
53
Hoop Flashcard Fan 🏵️
Ages 4-6Individual10 min
How to Play
1Teacher fans out several flashcards on the floor in front of a hula hoop. One child stands inside the hoop. Teacher taps a flashcard — "Whale!" — and the child inside the circle slaps the card and says "Whale!" Teacher nods: "Yes!" The child keeps the card inside the hoop as a collection. Next child steps in for their turn.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Use flashcards with clear, bold pictures — the child inside the hoop needs to see them from a distance.
54
Hoop Object Find 🏵️
Ages 4-6Circle10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop lies flat on the floor. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Apple!" Children look around the room and find an object that matches — a real apple on a shelf, a picture on the wall. The child who finds it brings it to the hoop and stands inside with the object. Class names the object and the word together: "Apple!" Teacher celebrates: "Great find!"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Limit the search to a specific area of the room so children do not disrupt other activities while searching.
55
Hoop Clap Tap 🏵️
Ages 4-6Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children sit in a circle around a hula hoop in the centre. Teacher shows a flashcard: "Banana!" Children count the letters by clapping their hands — B-A-N-A-N-A — seven claps. The child in the centre of the circle taps the hoop the same number of times with their hand. Then all children say the full word together: "Banana!" Teacher cheers.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Children can do both the tapping and the word-naming — vary who does each role each round.
56
Hoop Partner Tag 🏵️
Ages 4-6Pairs10 min
How to Play
1Partners hold a hula hoop between them and move together as a pair around the open space — stepping in sync, turning corners together. One pair is designated IT. IT moves and tags other pairs by touching their hoops together. Tagged pairs do a fun action as instructed by Teacher: "Spin three times!" Tagged pairs spin, giggle, and rejoin the game.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: IT pairs should switch roles every few minutes so everyone gets to move and to hold the hoop.
57
Hoop Rhythm Pass 🏵️
Ages 4-6Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children stand in a circle with one hula hoop. Teacher sets a rhythm: clap, pass, clap, pass. Children pass the hoop around in rhythm — one hand passes while the other claps. As each child receives the hoop they name a flashcard Teacher shows. If the rhythm breaks, Teacher says: "Let us find the beat again!" Children restart the rhythm together.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Start the rhythm slowly — even one beat per second is fine — and speed up as children become confident.
58
Hoop Body Part Game 🏵️
Ages 4-6Circle10 min
How to Play

Ages 4-6Teams10 min
How to Play
1Four hula hoops are placed in four corners of the room. Teacher makes four distinct sounds — a chime, a drumbeat, a whistle, a clap — and children walk toward the matching sound. Once inside the correct hoop, Teacher shows a flashcard: "Parrot!" All children in the hoop say "Parrot!" together. Teacher makes the next sound and children move again.
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Vary the four sounds each round so children listen carefully and do not just memorise a fixed pattern.

How to Play
1Children stand in a circle. One child places a cup inside the central hula hoop and names a word: "Cat!" Next child adds a second cup and names a new word: "Dog!" A tower of cups grows inside the hoop — each cup represents one word in the chain. Teacher asks: "Can you remember all the words?" Children look at the tower and try to recall the chain.

The other partner looks at the flashcard and names the word for each cup added: "Violin!" — first cup. "Window!" — second cup. After five cups, partners switch roles. Teacher asks: "How many words did you name together?"
Teacher Tip: Teacher Tip: Both partners should name words for each cup added so neither is left out of the speaking practice.

Ages 3-5Circle10 min
How to Play
1Children sit in a circle. One child puts their ear near a cup sitting in the centre of the hoop. Teacher whispers a word into the cup: "Watermelon." Ages 3-5Individual10 min
How to Play
1A hula hoop obstacle course is set up on the floor. One child balances a cup on their head and walks through the course — stepping inside hoops, jumping over others. At each station, Teacher shows a flashcard. If the child names it correctly, they may take the cup off their head. Teacher cheers: "Five correct — amazing balance!" Child collects cups.
